Hello all.

My native language is not english and I'm just starting out in photography and thought it would be nice to be able to use characters from my alphabet inside Lightroom 3. Does someone know if it´s ok to use special characters, or characters that are not in the english alphabet in Lightroom 3 for metadata or when naming collections or making keywords… stuff that´s written into the catalog file or XMP files.

It seems that Lightroom had some difficaulties with special characters in folder or filenames, so I've decided to use only english alpabetical characters for that naming convention, to avoid possible problems with Lightroom, but I'm not sure about the previous issue.

Dear KariKara,

 

Your English is so much better than my Icelandic!  I had to do some research on this question and I must admit that I have absolutely no first-hand experience with this topic.  I found this interesting post on using non-English characters in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom's caption field though.

 

From what I can tell, you are unlikely to have any problems using your native characters in the copyright and keywords fields.  I wouldn't expect any problems either with collection names or the copy name field either since these are a catalog features only and are never written to the file's metadata.  My advice is to experiment and see what happens but just to be safe keep those non-English characters out of the file / folder names.

Please let us know what you learn in this adventure.
