Hey, I’m trying to figure out how I can get my hands on an upgrade for my lightroom. I have lightroom 2 but want lightroom 3. But the Amazon link won’t send to my location. Is it because I live in Canada? Is there another place I can get the upgrade? I’ve only ever seen the full versions in the stores…thanks

Dear Esther Beaton,

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom version 2 and Photoshop Lightroom version 3 are completely separate programs. You can install Lightroom 3 even if no version of Lightroom 2 is currently installed on your computer. You will need your old Lightroom 2 serial number to complete the activation process but no version of the old software needs to be on your computer for the Lightroom 3 installation.

Hopefully installing Lightroom 3 and then upgrading your old Catalog solves the problem that I think you were having with the Lightroom 2 application.

Thank you so much for your response. Yes, everything is backed up, both images and catalog. My original question was that I only have a copy of the Upgrade version of LR 3. I thought maybe LR 2.7 has to be there in order to install LR3. I would so appreciate if you could answer that question and if not, then I will surely contact Adobe Support. Thanks again for your time.

Dear Esther Beaton,

Sorry to hear that you are still having troubles. This link will take you to the official Adobe Support web page. First let me ask when did you last back everything up? Are you confident that your images and your Lightroom Catalog are safely stored on more than one drive? If so then you could try completely uninstalling Lightroom 2 and installing Lightroom 3. Once installed perhaps you can use Lightroom 3 to update your old Catalog. There is no need to figure out what went wrong with Lightroom 2.7 if your Catalog successfully opens with Lightroom 3!

Dear Sally,

Adobe is telling you the truth. All you need to complete the upgrade is the new software, a Lightroom 3 serial number, and your old Lightroom 1 serial number. I must add that the same is true of Photoshop. There is no reason why you need an older copy of either program on your computer when upgrading if you have valid serial numbers.

Question to David Marx. I can’t find Adobe Lightroom Support to help me with the problem above. Can you give me the URL?

Alternatively, would you be able to help me with the issue if I tell you more?

It must be the application because I’ve tried to open different catalogs and I get the same message.
