Getting Started: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom v3 View Options Menu and Library Module Toolbar Customization

June 06, 2010 | | Comments 14

I released a whole bunch of tutorials recently on crucial parts of the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 setup process. The videos in this post are not nearly as important as the our articles on Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Catalog Creation and Image Storage Fundamentals, Professional-Grade Backup Plans, or our tutorial on the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Preferences Menus. Still, setting up the View Options Menu and customizing the Library Module’s Tool Bar is a big help when you are new to the program.

David, thank you for the great tutorial! Thank you, phranx, thanks for tip about where to click by Quick Develop (I thought I might wear out my menu making it open and close as I tried different buttons on the keyboard to equal the right click). :)

I just loaded LR3 on my new Macbook Pro. I’ve got LR 2.7 on a Dell and am comfortable with LR2. However, LR3 isn’t showing me the menu bar across the top: File, Edit, Photo, Metadata, etc. I need the bar, of course. Where is it, do you know? Thanks.

    • David Marx says:

      Dear John,

Try pressing the letter (F). In Adobe Photoshop Lightroom the F key controls the screen size. By default, Lightroom fits inside a window. Pressing F once makes that Window as big as possible. Pressing F again sends the program to “Full Screen Mode” which hides the menu bar and the Mac’s dock. In this mode the program also hides the menu bar at the top of the screen. Pressing F again cycles back to window display.

sorry – it turns out the right click must be on the sm window to the left of Quick Develop to get the submenu -

      Dear phrankx,

Glad you found the right place to right click for solo mode. It can be tricky to find and even harder to show in a video tutorial.

Was trying to set up solo mode on LR3 but, my LR3, on a MAC, does not show a submenu when you right-click on a menu header. Instead, the new instructions say option click sets up solo mode without using any submenu.
Love your tutorials. Just going through them now and getting prepared before I use it. Great job!

I am afraid I goofed after reading your tutorial. I am using LR2 by the way. I already had a large collection of images on an external hard drive. After reading about the catalog location, I changed the default location, and now I cannot locate the preview on LR. I get message that says image is missing or offline.
    Help!!

Thanks again! Your tutorials really help flatten the learning curve.

Just a thought: Maybe you could add numbers to the “Getting Started Right” tutorial series titles or add a separate up-datable post that lists the order in which you suggest beginners watch.
