LRSaver

Unless you’re still rockin’ an old, clunky CRT monitor with your computer, you no longer need a screensaver…but they’re still pretty fun to have. Most of my images are in Lightroom and, up until now, it’s taken some work-arounds to be able to use those photos elegantly in a screensaver. Enter LRSaver.

LRSaver is a screensaver built for Lightroom. Basically it uses the Lightroom-generated previews of your images for display in a slideshow format. By utilizing the previews rather than the original images, it allows you to view beautiful, full-screen slideshows of your photos whenever your computer is idle without having to have your original images available. Most of my originals are stored on external drives instead of my laptop’s internal hard drive. Now, I can have a slideshow of images displayed on my laptop without having to plug in those externals.

Here are some of the features of LRSaver:

  • Automatic image orientation display
  • Support for multiple monitors
  • Define screensaver images according to any combination of meta-data fields (e.g. best landscape photographs from last year) by utilizing Smart Collections
  • Arrow keys switch images during screensaver
  • Utilizes Lightroom’s image cache (previews) for minimal RAM & CPU utilization
  • Compatible with all Lightroom 2.x releases

LRSaver costs $9.99, but there is a 14-day trial available for download here.

My final thoughts… It’s no flying toaster, but if you’ve got images in Lightroom that you’d like to show off (and I hope you do!) LRSaver is a great way to do so!
