They are very similar programs designed to do basically the exact same thing.
I've used both programs extensively and found that, in my experience, Lightroom tends to perform faster than Aperture, has tighter integration with Adobe Photoshop, has better integrated local adjustments (dodging and burning, etc), and has better Web galleries.
I did enjoy Aperture's book-making capabilities, and I'm always a fan of the iLife integration that stems from using Apple products.
In the end, Lightroom won out for me. They both have 30-day free trials. Check them out for yourself before making a final decision.
Thanks,
Scott

Janelle,

They are very similar programs designed to do basically the exact same thing.

I’ve used both programs extensively and found that, in my experience, Lightroom tends to perform faster than Aperture, has tighter integration with Adobe Photoshop, has better integrated local adjustments (dodging and burning, etc), and has better Web galleries.

I did enjoy Aperture’s book-making capabilities, and I’m always a fan of the iLife integration that stems from using Apple products.

In the end, Lightroom won out for me.
