Reader Question: Can you recommend a good book on Lightroom 2?

January 10, 2009 | David | Comments 5

The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers by Scott KelbyMichal writes “I just upgraded to Lightroom 2.2 so now I would like your advice on a ‘How-To Book’ to purchase so that I can continue learning about the program…. I’m more computer-illiterate than computer-literate, so something that covers the basics in detail is important.”

I have good news for all of you seeking a Lightroom v.2 guidebook. I think that there are now at least four solid, easy-to-read, instructional books on the market. I went ahead and put all of the titles that I recommend into a book list over at our store.

Of these four books, Martin Evening’s The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers is the thickest and heaviest. This is by far the most detailed and extensive book on the market. We used the previous version of this book as the textbook for my workshops two years ago.

Last year, I switched over to Mikkel Aaland’s Photoshop Lightroom 2 Adventure, because it has the biggest screen shots and the most diversity of images. I believe that big wide pages make for better textbooks.

My good friend Scott Rouse recently posted a review of his favorite which is Scott Kelby’s The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers. This link should take you over to his review. Of all these book’s, Scott Kelby’s is probably the easiest reading and the shortest.

Right now, I am working on a more extensive review of my new favorite which is The Photoshop Lightroom Workbook: Workflow not Workslow in Lightroom 2 by Seth Resnick and Jamie Spritzer. I am loving the way this book goes beyond the buttons and tries to guide a photographer all the way through the entire digital imaging process. More on this in a future post.

I think that it amazing that we have four great printed resources already on the bookshelf for a program isn’t even a year old yet!

I would second the comments about the Lightroom Adventure book.

I bought the first one (the Iceland adventure) and was very impressed with how it takes you through real workflows and as David points out above, the large clear screen shots.
