Useful Keyboard Shortcuts in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

August 26, 2008 | | Comments 10

Mac Aluminum Keyboard

Efficiency is what really makes Lightroom shine. In order to take full advantage of what Lightroom has to offer, you’ll want to learn some of the most commonly used keyboard shortcuts. It’s much quicker to navigate through all that Lightroom has to offer using the keyboard rather than the mouse, in most cases.

There are LOTS of keyboard shortcuts, and this is far from a complete list. Check out the article and let us know your favorites in the comments section.

I’ve included downloadable Quick Reference Sheets at the end of the article that you can print out and keep near your computer for, well…Quick Reference. Enjoy.

Modules

There are five Modules in Lightroom. They are listed across the top-right of the Lightroom interface in the “Module Picker.”

The Lightroom Module Picker

The Lightroom Module Picker

You should never need to drag your mouse up there to move from module to module. In fact, you should go ahead and hide the entire top pane for more screen real estate. You’ll never miss it. Memorize the following shortcuts to select the module you need:

ActionMacWindows
Go to Library ModuleCommand – Option – 1 or GControl – Alt – 1 or G
Go to Develop ModuleCommand – Option – 2 or DControl – Alt – 2 or D
Go to Slideshow ModuleCommand – Option – 3Control – Alt – 3
Go to Print ModuleCommand – Option – 4 or Command – PControl – Alt – 4 or Control – P
Go to Web ModuleCommand – Option – 5Control – Alt – 5
Go to Previous ModuleCommand – Option – Up ArrowControl – Alt – Up Arrow

Panels

The two side panels in Lightroom contain many important features, but they do take up quite a bit of space. The image below shows the location of the Left and Right Module Panels.

  1. I know this is pretty petty, but can the pick Flag labels be changed? I use the “p” and “x” key a lot, but they are on opposite ends of the keyboard. I would like them a lot closer so I could use one hand and not have to hunt and peck all the time.

Second, is there are way to scroll through the pictures in the Develop module instead of always picking the next picture with the mouse? My arrow buttons don’t seem to work once I start editing a photo. Thanks!!!!

      Dear Mike Gregory,

This is the kind of user interface feature request that you should send directly to Adobe. I urge you to create a post for your suggestion here. Adobe doesn’t act on every request immediately but I am convinced that Tom Hogarty, the product manager, takes these sort of suggestions seriously. You might also try fixing this yourself using Timothy Armes awesome Keyboard Tamer plugin.

Try using the scroll bar at the bottom of the Filmstrip while in the Develop Module to scroll through your pictures. You could also open up the grid display in a second monitor window and then switch from screen to screen when you need to advance to another image.

I’ve seen the O shortcut used on various tutorials to show/hide the overlay when you are doing various adjustments. I know how to use this and know I can switch between colors (red, green, white, black). The problem I’m running into is that the overlay is so light that I can barely see it, no matter what color I use. Is there a way to darken the overlay so it is very obvious where I have adjusted?

    • davem says:

      Dear Sarah,

There isn’t anyway for you to darken the overlay itself. Like you said, you can change its color but if its still too faint no matter what color you pick then I suspect that it is not the overlays fault. I wonder if either you are painting with a very light brush (low flow) or using a very low density setting for your adjustment. The overlay changes strength to try and reflect your choices when working with these controls. I also need to ask just how exact is your monitor? Is it a precisely calibrated professional graphics display or are you working on a little laptop screen with the contrast turned way down? I have to ask because this too could effect the image that you are seeing on your screen.

  3. Hi John,

Sorry you’re having trouble downloading the files. I was able to download them just fine this morning.

You may have to right-click on the link and choose “Save File” or “Save File As…”

The Windows reference sheet can be downloaded here, and the Mac reference sheet can be downloaded here.

    Thanks,
    Scott

  4. John Stone says:

Can you make the quick reference sheets available? I’m not able to donwload the Windows one.

  5. [...] it is closed, you can show it by clicking on or next to the word “History” or with the keyboard shortcut Cmd+Ctrl+3 on a Mac (Ctrl+Shift+3 on a PC). Click next to History to open the History [...]

  6. [...] Click on the top of the Navigator Panel to hide and show it. Optionally, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Cmnd+0 on a Mac or Ctrl+Shift+0 on a PC to show and hide the panel. Click here to view some of my other favorite keyboard shortcuts. [...]

  7. [...] The short answer, of course, is no. Photographers who do lots of retouching work in Adobe Photoshop or graphic designers are usually a big fans of tablets, but if you’re doing most or all of your work in Lightroom, then a tablet may not be for you. Most of the time, I’m just using keyboard shortcuts to move around and using my mouse as little as possible. (By the way, have you read our article on Useful Keyboard Shortcuts in Lightroom?) [...]

  8. Arno says:

Increasing and decreasing brush size (in Development mode) works also with the scroll wheel of the mouse, if you have one.
